When planning and saving for retirement, investors are confronted with a variety of investment choices, ranging from the very safe to very aggressive. There are 100s of Monte Carlo simulators and calculators to assist retirees in projecting a so-called "safe withdrawal rate" (SWR) from their volatile, equity-based portfolios that would minimize the risk of outliving their savings. But these tools do not compare those SWR projections with the safest -- and potentially less frugal -- alternative: funding one's retirement years with a portfolio of laddered Treasury Inflation Protected Securities ("TIPS"), fortified by a longevity annuity. TIP$TER (Testing Investment Portfolio Strategies Toward Early Retirement) is a free, U.S.-patent-pending retirement calculator, planner, and Monte Carlo simulator. First, TIP$TER projects the annual, inflation-adjusted retirement expenditures that a portfolio fully invested in TIPS, and fortified by a longevity annuity, would be expected to sustain. Second, TIP$TER simulates the retirement expenditures that a diversified portfolio -- allocated in accordance with a user-specified asset allocation between a total stock market (TSM) index and TIPS -- would sustain. Third, TIP$TER compares the sustainable withdrawal from an all-TIPS portfolio with the average annual withdrawals from the 5, 50, and 95 percentile-ranked simulations. In this manner, TIP$TER directly compares the real-life risks and rewards of a diversified portfolio with those of the safest, most approximately "risk-free" alternative. TIP$TER makes its projections on the basis of the user's inputs. The user specifies his or her existing and future anticipated retirement savings and sources of retirement income, as well as the real rate of return on his or her laddered TIPS portfolio, the "extra" annualized return (aka the "equity risk premium") he or she expects on the TSM index, and the annual standard deviation of returns he or she expects on the TSM index.
